Animal Validation
Problem: Currently available human glucometers do not accurately measure whole blood glucose levels in animals. Instrument inaccuracy varies throughout
the standard curve depending on manufacturer.
Purpose: To utilize the latest technology to provide an accurate animal validated glucometer to measure glucose levels in cats and dogs.
Design: Animal Diabetes Management worked with several clinics and home users with diabetic pets to establish curve parameters. Whole blood samples were taken and immediately run on the glucometers. The remainder of the sample was then processed for analysis in a laboratory, or on an in-house chemistry analyzer. Data for values from 25 to greater than 500 mg/dl were collected. A curve was established and stored in the glucometer that represented a mean value for the chemistry analyzers. Representative comparisons are displayed in the table below:

Result: Animal Diabetes Management has developed an animal validated glucometer that is adjusted to represent the mean of comparative plasma or serum values from commonly used chemistry analyzers. Our
GlucoPet glucometer
strips are validated for use in dogs and cats.
